The eyes, vital for daily tasks, are often neglected until issues arise. Stress from prolonged screen use, poor posture, unhealthy diet, and irregular routines contribute to common eye ailments such as myopia, hypermetropia, cataracts, and dry eyes. Ayurveda links eye disorders to imbalances in doshas, especially pitta. Simple exercises can help maintain eye health:
Palming: Rub hands for 10 sec and cover closed eyes without pressure.
Eye rotations: Clockwise and counterclockwise with open and closed eyes.
Blinking exercises: Close and open eyes tightly, repeating 10 times.
Candle flame gaze: Move closer and farther from a candle flame for 25 to 50 times.
Yoga poses like Surya Namaskar, Bhujangasana, and Savasana benefit eye health.
Regular Foot Massage: Massage your feet with oil regularly to improve blood circulation, which indirectly benefits eye health.
Hydration: Hold a mouthful of water for a few minutes 2-4 times a day to keep your body hydrated, aiding overall eye function.
Moisturize Eyes: Place wet palms on your closed eyes for a few seconds to provide instant relief and moisture.
Temperature Sensitivity: Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as splashing cold water on your eyes when your body is hot and sweaty.
Water Temperature: Refrain from splashing your eyes with icy cold or hot water; instead, use fresh cold or warm water to cleanse them gently.
Triphala Water: Rinse your eyes with Triphala water (soak 1 teaspoon of Triphala overnight in water and filter it in the morning) for its soothing and cleansing properties.
Cold Compress: Place cotton pads dipped in cold water or rose water on your closed eyes to reduce puffiness and refresh them.
Head Hygiene: Avoid using hot water regularly on your head, as it can indirectly affect eye health.
Dietary Considerations: Limit consumption of excessively salty and sour foods, as well as alcohol and tobacco, which can negatively impact eye health.
Sleep Hygiene: Maintain a regular sleep schedule, avoiding daytime sleeping and nighttime awakenings, to ensure proper rest for your eyes.
Lighting Conditions: Avoid reading or working in dim or extremely bright light to reduce strain on your eyes.
Visual Habits: Minimize excessive gazing at any object, watching TV from close distances, or prolonged periods of weeping, as well as suppressing natural urges, excessive anger, and grief, all of which can strain your eyes.
Nutrient-Rich Diet: Include foods like barley, green moong, karela, brinjal, drumstick, pumpkin, radish, raw banana, coriander, curry leaves, turmeric, Amla, tomato, dates, and almonds in your diet for their beneficial effects on eye health.
Fruit Consumption: Consume fruits such as apples, oranges, grapes, mangoes, papayas, guavas, and pomegranates, which are rich in vitamins and antioxidants beneficial for your eyes.
Manage Health Conditions: Be aware that conditions like constipation and diabetes can adversely affect eye health, so it's important to manage them effectively.
Avoiding excessive alcohol, tobacco, daytime sleeping, and nighttime awakening is also beneficial. Additionally, Ayurvedic treatments focus on personalized diet, medication, and therapies:
Internal medicines like Triphala ghrita and saptamrit lauh are prescribed.
Medicated anjans, nasal drops, and netra tarpan provide relief.
Consuming a paste of triphala, honey, and ghee at night.
Chewing cardamom seeds with honey can be beneficial.
